Liberty 2009 Feedback
The 2009 Liberty World Outrigger Competition closed on Saturday, June 28 with a great sense of accomplishment not only by those who participated in the event but also by those people who organized it. Though a slightly smaller race than previous years due to the economy, it was still one of the most ambitious and complicated to organize yet. We are always looking for feedback on what went well and what needed some more work so we can make subsequent Liberty Races an even greater event.
Whether you were a competitor, sponsor or spectator, we are eager to hear your feedback on this race and any suggestions you may have.
Please type in your comments below and we will take them into consideration for Liberty 2010

Just wanted to Thank the organizers of this awesome race. It was very well organized considering all the procedures required when organizing a race of this size and location. Logistical nightmare! All in all I believe that everyone did a great job!
I want to send a special Niawen to Paula for all the help and support you lended while we were there.
This was only my second Outrigger race and I thoroughly enjoyed it and hope to return again to wrestle with more of the crazy currents of the East and Hudson rivers…my crew did an amazing job and I am proud to be a part of the Onake River Runners.

The idea of this race and what it represented made the Liberty Challenge very appealing to us. The “lady” represents freedom and liberty to all to come to our shores. The race was a challenge but incredible, especially for us lucky Hawaiians that normally paddle in warm, blue oceans. We really admire all of you in the East Coast that love outrigger paddling so much that you brave the cold, dodge every type of watercraft and paddle in cold water– that you can’t even swim in! We enjoyed the city with its great entertainment and shows, incredible food and the ease of transportation. We were happy however, to return to our island pace. We loved your luau and hope that tradition will continue to bring all the participants together. Special mahalos to Blake Conant for loaning us the club wa’a and for helping us line up another one with Kai Ani Ani. Also to the race director, Ed and Carol Choi, great job and aloha spirit! We such return! Imua and aloha to you all! Lee Kalama, New Hope Canoe Club

PS. My husband who is our coach suggests that the mixed race could be age averaged which may draw more entries and make it more equitable for all and give a more even playing ground. It could easily be done and then you could have categories like 40-45 or 50-55 or 55-60. What do you think?
