NYO’09 Season
April 21st, 2009
The weather is warming up and we’re almost ready to get back on the water. Refurbished boats, growing membership, new leadership, continued excellence in our Liberty Race, our popular Novice program…2009 is going to be one of our best seasons yet.
The Boats
Both of our boats were completely refurbished over the winter. Better, cleaner, faster…the boats are now rigged and ready for the 2009 season. The boats are currently open to paid members with cold water gear. As the weather and water temperatures rise to safe levels (predicted to be early or mid-May), we will begin our regular practices and start up our popular Saturday Novice Sessions open to anyone interested in trying the sport of outrigger canoeing.
Membership
$325 will buy you membership for the entire 2009 Season. That includes access to all of our scheduled practices on our OC6 fleet, access to our OC1 and OC2 fleet, membership with the East Coast Outrigger Racing Association allowing you to participate in races and more. Click on the Membership tab for more information.
2009 Liberty World Outrigger Competition

New Board Members
- Ed Acker has been re-elected President. His leadership the past several years has brought New York Outrigger to new heights.
- Tony Hearns has been elected Treasurer. His experience as a small business owner combined with his enthusiasm in all things sports related will be extremely beneficial to the club.
- Emily Harris has been elected as Director-at-Large. An avid paddler, she brings her vast knowledge of outrigger canoeing and coaching experience to the club.
Along with Susan Skinner (Vice-President) and Maureen Malave (Secretary), we look forward to continued growth and excellence under their leadership.
Many thanks to outgoing board members Joanne Carlos and Lucy March for their incredible efforts which include leaving NYO financially healthy and making the dream of a new boathouse a reality.
New York Outrigger is looking forward to a big 2009. We hope you can join us!
MAHALO! Annual NYO Fundraiser, 12.6, 6-9pm
November 10th, 2008
Thanks to everyone who made this event a success! Thanks to everyone who lent their time in helping before, during and after the event. Thanks to all who donated and showed up and to those who donated even though they couldn’t show up. Although we didn’t sell many paintings this year, some prints and Holiday gifts were purchased and a good time had by all. What a great way to end a stellar year and we look forward to seeing you on the water in 2009!
NYO at the ECORA Championships
August 4th, 2008
New York Outrigger participated in the ECORA OC-1 and OC-2 Championships held in Milford, Connecticut on August 2nd, 2008. Sponsored by the East Coast Outrigger Racing Association in conjunction with Hawaiian Outriggers East and Eyecatcher Hawaii, the annual 8-mile race in Long Island Sound was a blast even with inclement weather looming in the skies.
Congratulations to:
- Jeremy who placed 1st in the Open Men’s long course.
- Maureen and Carol who placed 1st in the OC-2 Women’s category.
- Jo who placed 3rd in OC-1 Women’s Category.
- Roger who placed 4th in the Senior Men’s Masters Division but we’re told was 1st in spirit.
Well done to our crews for an excellent NYO showing and our hosts for yet another great race.
